Overview
Kevin Douillez (b. 1990) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. A self taught artist, Kevin utilizes a variety of methods to create his abstract experiences. Composed of acrylic, oil, pastel, and spray paint, Kevin’s pieces are not only varied in medium, but also in their art historical inspirations. Traces of abstract expressionists such as Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko and contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Robert Nava can be seen in his creations. Kevin’s works are born through both intuition and impulse, and are thereby rife with raw emotion. He describes having a love/hate relationship with his artwork, which often makes his pieces processes of de and re construction. In what he perceives as a sort of rebirth, his paintings are routinely transformed and painted over. Among the many emotional and physical layers in his artwork, subjects that permeated his childhood—such as dragons or rainbows—can be found. Invested in topics like family, emotion, and sexuality, Kevin’s uninhibited artworks explore the architects of identity through bold shapes and bright colors. His work has been exhibited internationally in Spain and Belgium.
